Intercultural Competence for Beginners Modern work contexts require the ability to communicate with a broad range of people. Learning intercultural communication can reduce miscommunication and misunderstandings, which occur even among established teams and people of similar backgrounds. The ability to work together without appearing ‘odd’ or ‘strange’ is a key competency, as are the ability to accept and value differences, to be flexible in one’s behaviour while maintaining one’s individuality, and to focus on goals so as not to be derailed by unexpected events. These skills can be learned when understood and practiced. It helps, of course, to have an inborn sense of adventure and fun.
The goals of this workshop are: -> to become familiar with relevant concepts -> to understand perceptual filters -> to achieve an understanding of essential competencies -> to develop strategies that enable participants to develop their own skills individually and independently. We will provide a vocabulary for analysis and dialogue and participants will draw on their own strengths to manage this rather complicated area of personal growth. Particular attention will be paid to interactive strategies that often make German speakers feel uncomfortable like acknowledgement and repair, the use of softeners, modal verbs, understatement and even the frequent use of ‘please’.
