Networking Skills for the Globally Mobile Networking is about establishing and nurturing relationships and not about winning unfair advantages or selling oneself at any costs. Most people network quite naturally today. However, work requires more and more people to make the transition to another country, either as students or as workers who follow their job opportunities. This mobility comes at a cost. Established networks, in addition to traditional networks of family and friends, are left behind. This is the challenge: nurturing old ties while building new relationships in a short time. In this seminar we will look at the various issues involved in networking when moving to another country: Your personality: What do I bring with me? What am I looking for? How important are relationships for me? Your working environment: Asking the right questions. Using professional associations. Talking to strangers. We will develop strategies that make the beginning in a new country just that bit easier. Participants are encouraged to bring their own networks and share resources. |
